|
The SHAWCO IT Project was established at K2 in 2002 – with a larger expansion in 2004 as the computer centre was built. Through the help of 50 student volunteers, the IT Project passes on computer literacy skills to 90 grade 8-10 learners in Khayelitsha. IT aims at developing essential computer literacy skills and an interest in further education by promoting culture of learning while having fun. In doing so, IT plans to develop a consistnet and solid program, whiich will be universally applicable amongst a variety of differnet avenues. As a part of the IT project, participants have between 2 and 4 hours of volunteer contact time a week, during 1 or 2 sessions respectively, depending on their age. These contact sessions include time for both the theory and practical application which are fun, educational and prepare learners with appropriate and applicable IT skills. The IT project teaches participants how to use Microsoft Word, Power Point, Excel, Outlook and the Internet for a variety of tasks. |
|
Masizikhulise(let us grow together) aims to provide and empower participants with the skills, knowledge and motivation to become more economically productive members of the South African society, which they accomplish by starting their own businesses, getting meaningful jobs, honing and applying their IT skills, as well as being socially responsible and active members of their communities. In 2008, Masizikhulise will seek to consolidate the existing project in Nyanga as well as expanding to Khayelitsha with the same project goals and aspirations. With the help of 25 dedicated student volunteers at each center, Masizikhulise provides 50-60 unemployed young adults between the ages of 18 and 35 years with an intensive six month programme offering the four sub-projects of business entrepreneurship, employment search skills, IT and breaking-in. Entrepreneurship provides participants with operational business skills/opportunities to formalise their entrepreneurial ideas and aspirations. Employment Search Skills equips participants with appropriate tools to seek out and secure employment opportunities. IT empowers participants with relevant IT skills vital for succeeding in the modern business environment. And lastly, Breaking In produces socially responsible participants that are able to educate and empower their communities.
