STEP goes out to the Khayelitsha centre three times a week (Monday and Wednesday afternoons as well as Saturday mornings). We tutor Maths, English and Life Skills. We have 114 volunteers (who go out on one of the three days) who tutor 180 participants. This works out to a class ration of 1:5, that is, 1 volunteer to 5 learners. This allows for better interaction between the learners and participants which aids in the ongoing evaluation of learners.
STEP aims to provide young learners with extra tuition that builds upon all that is learnt at school. It seeks to instil in the learners a love and respect for education before the negative vices of their poverty stricken communities grab a hold of them. |
