The SMART Project (Student Mentored All Round Tuition) was piloted for the first time in 2006 through the generous support of the FNB Trust. Up until 2006, SHAWCO projects had only catered for Grades 3-9. Through after-school tutoring by teachers and 120 student volunteers, SMART helps 120 grade 10-12 learners to develop communication, mathematical & scientific reasoning skills, as well as improving content knowledge in English, Mathematics, Science. In 2008, SMART is also doing career guidance to develop skills and gain knowledge for after-school opportunities available to the participants. Students are advised and supervised by teachers familiar with the relevant curricula. These teachers act as mentors and expert advisors for the students’ development of the curricula, as well as the student’s execution of the tutoring sessions. Learners have two lessons of 2 hours each in subject-based teaching including Maths and Science during the week, and then a communication lesson and career guidance lesson on a Saturday for 4 hours. These lessons take place in Khayelitsha in the Euxolweni Primary school. If you would like to any further information contact Neo Malete, the project leader for 2008 @
