The SHAWCO IT Project was established at K2 in 2002 – with a larger expansion in 2004 as the computer centre was built. Through the help of 50 student volunteers, the IT Project passes on computer literacy skills to 90 grade 8-10 learners in Khayelitsha. IT aims at developing essential computer literacy skills and an interest in further education by promoting culture of learning while having fun. In doing so, IT plans to develop a consistnet and solid program, whiich will be universally applicable amongst a variety of differnet avenues. As a part of the IT project, participants have between 2 and 4 hours of volunteer contact time a week, during 1 or 2 sessions respectively, depending on their age. These contact sessions include time for both the theory and practical application which are fun, educational and prepare learners with appropriate and applicable IT skills. The IT project teaches participants how to use Microsoft Word, Power Point, Excel, Outlook and the Internet for a variety of tasks.
