As a part of the KenSTEP project, 100 grade 3-7 learners from Kensington have three contact hours during two sessions a week. English, Maths and Life skills lessons are classroom-based, as well as interactive and activity-based sessions. Several big events and outings are run each term, including Market Day, a Grade 7 leadership camp (or a trip to Robben Island), a visit to UCT and finally, a graduation day for grade 7’s. Learners are also involved in the Arts and July holiday project being run in Kensington. There are 56 volunteers in the project. There is a strong emphasis on ongoing mentorship and evaluation of the learners. KenSTEP is run from the Kensington SHAWCO centre.
